Being too lazy to endure the interminable—and disjointed—night bus ride back home this evening, I got a cab. It was driven by a very nice Nigerian chap, who had a degree in statistics from a Nigerian university, and a degree in IT from one of our wonderful institutions. All of these qualifications and yet driving a cab—was he bitter?
Nope. He said, "What I love about this country is that you can make for yourself the life that you want. I'm not in IT, but I work for myself. It's very good."
I'll admit that this disquisition—which was far longer than the snippet that was quoted above—made your humble Devil perversely proud. I guess this is what it is like supporting a football team—you had bugger all to do with their victory, and yet you feel proud of their achievements.
Maybe our country is not as bad as we paint it? Are we just jaundiced?
