... at The Kitchen. Well, to be strictly accurate, it's a change in your humble Devil's circumstances.
When I first moved down to London, I had been, effectively, working for myself for a couple of years and I was thoroughly tired of it. The plan was always to get down to the Big Smoke and to get myself a full time job. As it happens, that plan was delayed as I started to get a decent amount of work down here.
However, the problems that I had with working for myself—having to go out and find work, motivate myself to do it and deal with the ups and downs of the financial situation as yet another client decided that they would pay their bill at their convenience rather than on time—had never really gone away.
In addition, over the last few months, your humble Devil has become increasingly bored with doing jobs that were largely similar. The lack of creative energy meant that I had not been developing, artistically or technically. And hey! I'm only thirty: I'm not prepared to go into that dark night of creative nullity just yet.
So, for the first time since starting to write this blog, your humble Devil has been offered—and has today formally accepted—an offer of a full-time job doing design within a small but swiftly-growing company. I'll be mainly working with a proprietory content management system based on ColdFusion, doing both design for sites (and intranets) and also contributing to the development of the system.
I have checked the blogging situation with the company and they are happy for me to continue to write here (providing I give away no exciting industrial secrets, of course) so I shall be updating The Kitchen regularly: just not quite as regularly.
Initially, there is going to be a reasonable amount of rail commuting involved, so I shall be able to write posts offline whilst on my way to and from work and, of course, I shall write in the evenings.
It may take me a little while to settle down to this long-forgotten lifestyle (so bear with me) but I am looking forward to it. Most of all, I am looking forward to working with other designers: something that I have never really had in anything but the most desultory way.
Anyway, I just thought that you, my loyal readers, should know. And now, I must spend the next week tidying up: I travelled down to the office to take part in a development meeting this morning (hence the lack of blogging) and I shall be starting next Monday.
Now, I've just got to get used to waking up early in the mornings...
