There's a quality post about the misuse of statistics over at Squander Two.
Pick a hundred Britons at random. Place them in a narrow alleyway with high walls. Drive a truck with electrified razor-sharp spikes welded to its front down the alleyway towards them at 6 mph. Apparently, only forty of your subjects will run away.

There was a corker in today's FT, the head of Cambridgeshire polcie saying that they only had 139 police officers per 1,000 population, as against over 200 in South London.

For fuck's sake, I know we are moving towards a police state, but don't they mean 139 police officers for 100,000 population?

Oh yeah? So what has happened for the last ten years, exactly?
