Israel

For a bit of light relief—but no less informative for that—I suggest that you go and read the excellent post by our man in Dubai.
For starters, Israeli settlement of the West Bank began way before 1990. And Palestinian society was smashed long before the collapse of the Soviet Union, largely because of the invasion and occupation of their land by Egypt and Jordan from which they launched a genocidal war against Israel using Soviet arms and money. On this evidence, it is difficult to see how the Soviet Union was a force for peace in Palestine and the Middle East, and how Israel’s settlement expansion is relevant to its demise.

Read the whole thing: great fisking, fine knowledge of history...

I shall return to this subject at length, mainly because I am heartily pissed off by people talking absolute bollocks about it, at a later date, but I think that we should do a little bit of groundwork on the whole Israel and Middle East debate. Let us avoid any conflict, though, over whether or not the state of Israel should have been formed in the first place: it is a pointless debate. Please look at your basic history of the modern state, and have a good read because I am only going to be interested in debating with people who have made themselves aware of the facts.

Right, time to get a couple of hours' sleep before I surge forth once more to battle with code and printers...
