The excellent Right For Scotland shows how to really be "tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime".
What we need is state of the art prisons. We need single bed cells with enough room to enter, get undressed and use a slopping out pot. They will be sound proof and inmates will not be allowed to talk to each other outside of work hours. The bed should have 1 sheet and the cell be centrally heated. There will be no television, no pool tables. Prisoners will work in a shop all day producing certain goods. Post bags or perhaps furniture. At the end of their 9-hour day they will be returned to their cell. At weekends they will be given basic state education in English, Maths, Geography and cooking.

Through its early release program the Labour party has managed to prove the central point of this piece. Crime is caused by the criminal and if he is under lock and key then crime [mainly committed against the most vulnerable in society] will not be committed.

The man is not some smug, middle-class bastard living in some neat, little, tree-lined suburb: he knows what he is talking about...
