Via Timmy, proof—if ever it were needed—that Hollywood doesn't have the first clue about fuck all. Especially to do with oil, oil companies, working conditions in—or just about anything else about—the Middle East.

Syriana: massive pile of steaming camel-shit...Allegedly.

Erm, the word "fiction" seems to have been forgotten along the way.

I can't comment on Syriana because I haven't seen it and I don't know anything about the oil industry. Whether the portrayal of the Middle East oil industry in Syriana is correct or not is beyond me. I would rather nail my tongue to the floor than read about the oil industry.*

But generally, I don't think "It's just a story" is a good excuse for sloppy research. If a filmmaker decides to use a fictional film based on "facts" to get a political point across to the audience, and from the reviews of Syriana that appears to be what was intended here, I think that filmmaker has a responsibility to ensure that he's got the underlying facts right.

*Comic hyperbole. In fact I would much rather read about the oil industry than nail my tongue to the floor if they were the only two options available to me at the time.

So now this site is not just derivative, it's reporting on a report from someone else's site on a subject raised by a third site.
