Bollocks disease of the day

Today's horseshit load of old crap from the world of Made-up Diseases (and Psychiatry) is Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD).
All children are oppositional from time to time, particularly when tired, hungry, stressed or upset. They may argue, talk back, disobey, and defy parents, teachers, and other adults. Oppositional behavior is often a normal part of development for two to three year olds and early adolescents. However, openly uncooperative and hostile behavior becomes a serious concern when it is so frequent and consistent that it stands out when compared with other children of the same age and developmental level and when it affects the child's social, family, and academic life.

In the olden days, parents would have treated these children cruelly, realising that, even were this some sort of disease, the little fuckers would never get on in life until the disease had been beaten out of them. A bit like left-handedness, really. These days, no doubt, we drug them instead...

This really is a load of old bollocks.

It doesn't really matter what name you give it (ODD, or SBS - Spoilt Brat Syndrome) it is clear that the child in question needs to have their symptoms treated if we want it to achieve (what we define as) their full potential as an adult.

If the prescription up until now has been to beat the shit out of the kid, then it seems to me that the namby-pamby, arty-farty, politically correct therapy route is worth a try.

Or, give the kid a lolly. Either way, the issue is over who pays for the treatment. Do kids with ODD get treated on the NHS?

For once you are too restrained.

Not only are these make beleive conditions being diagnosed, they are being diagnosed by the nanny, teachers, and the school caretaker. The drug companies for whom this is very big business promote the conditions as well as the medication they provide.

What is worse, it is mostly working class children who attract these diagnoses and medication. Sebastien and Hermione have "dyslexia" and psychologists.

It stinks

It is a "Brave New World" Nightmare
