To Private Eye...

Dear Sir,

I wonder if anyone has spotted the remarkable resemblance between the front cover of Private Eye (06/12/05)...

... and this remarkably poor Michael Heath cartoon from The Spectator (16/12/05), published ten days later?*

Are the two, by any chance, related, other than by the fact that Michael Heath publishes cartoons in both of these magazines? I also wonder if both of these are in any way related to the hundreds and thousands of similar jokes and aspersions on the same theme that have been doing the rounds of the internet over the last few months? I think that we should be told.

Yours faithfully,

DK

I've said it before and I'll say it again: please can people stop hiring Michael Heath? He cannot draw, he isn't witty, or even acerbic. He is not, in any way, percipacious or insightful, nor does he have any other redeeming features as a cartoonist. He is, as we have now seen, utterly unoriginal and I am starting to find the continuing publishing of his "cartoons", in both The Spectator and Private Eye, deeply offensive. Michael Heath is crap.

Now, take someone like Honeysett (whom I particularly love because everybody looks evil and ill-favoured) or McLachlan: now we're talking good cartoonists...

You say his cartoons in The Spectator are crap. I don't disagree, but I think The Spectator itself is crap: it has about as much intellectual rigour as The Sun, and that's that it is: The Sun for old fogeys.

Phil,

Glad about that; it's partially based on the logo for Devil's Kitchen Design which I drew many years ago.

Re: The Spectator. It's not always true; I have come across a few articles that have made me think very hard about the subjects that they are talking about. To be sure, these are usually by guest writers rather than the regulars.

This Xmas double-edition is particularly uninteresting.

I fucking hate Michael Heath. His cartoons are brain-numbingly obvious and deeply unfunny. Whereas more talented political cartoonists manage to put a different slant on things (I'm thinking here of Mac in the Daily Mail - he takes the piss like nobody's business, but he always finds a new angle, and there's always a genuine chuckle in his work) Heath deals in the obvious, and his humour, such as it is, is spiteful and mean. Just take a look at the figures he draws; twisted up with corruption and hate. However you feel about the figures portrayed, there's no wit there, not the remotest gentleness or true humour. Certainly no eloquence. He just takes the most obvious, block-headed issue and twists it into as nasty a shape as he can manage.

What he should do is, he should fuck off. I mean, for the love of fuck, the guy can't even draw.
