Quote of the Day...

... comes, rather unusually, from Iain Dale's post on Education Maintenance Allowances (EMAs)—and Cameron's rather disappointing lack of u-turn on that policy.
EMAs are a waste of money and there are far better ways to encourage 16 year olds to remain in education. Providing a decent education might be a good start.

Pithy and correct.

EMAs are paid to those over 16 who remain in further education. Of course, when Labour passes their law to force young people to remain in education for another two years, can we assume that EMAs will no longer be paid out to those under 18...?

Then they will be able to claim that they've made savings!

The fact that 2 years extra school time is part of the equation will be conveniently forgotten....

They are a fancy form of unemployment relief to keep them out of the figures. Just imagine, they could he shovelling snow instead.

Don't be daft - they aren't allowed to play in snow, never mind shovel it....

That's if teachers ever bother going back into work now that it's a bit cold.

However they are allowed - encouraged even - to shovel shit with their dicks ...

They only pay EMA if you have a low family income. My boys got no EMA, despite the fact that I amfar from rich. They seriously got fed up watching kids at college drink their EMA every weekend while I cold not afford to give them the same amount as pocket money. Needless to say teh EMA kids did not put the smae effort in at college as my boys.

These allowances are a big problem. My children looked forward to fifth year at school because all the neds would have left and they would be able to get on with learning something. Surprise! Not only did the neds NOT leave, but they got extra booze and fag money to stay on. Lessons were still disrupted! Gah!

Then to make things even worse, my youngest, who as a scion of a normal wage-slaving taxpaying PAYE family, discovered that a pal of his, the son of a much wealthier (but self-employed) family, was getting this "bung". No doubt some clever accountant had been able to prove that the other family were poor enough to qualify.

Expensive, disruptive, poorly-thought-out, and ineffective. It's a typical New Labour scheme when you think about it.

I teach youngsters who get EMAs. On the day some shit-awful new killing computer game came out they couldn't wait to get out of the classroom (hastily leaving their work behind, because who cares about achieving a pointless certificate) in order to rush to the shops to buy the game with their EMA allowances.

Well, I shouldn't complain: it keeps video game shops in business and redistributes my taxes.

But when they need to buy some tool of education –– you know, dull old things like pens and paper –– they "have no money left," though they do in all fairness scrape up enough cash for early-morning sugary drinks that leave them hyper for the rest of the day.

But there is the pleasure from these state handouts that some of them are actually obliged to communicate: when they turn up late they lose their EMA and a mini-volcano erupts as they wail they were here all the time and I just didn't see them sitting quietly in the corner. Riiiight...

Unless of course they were wrestling under the desk and I plain forgot to check for them there.

Yep. EMAs are great. It keeps some kids of no talent coming back to college so they can show their new mobile phones off and practice being ridiculous and anti-social. Way to go, socialism!

I too work with EMA claiming young bods. In too many cases if their parents are "poor" then I am a blody Monkey's Uncle. Their parents swann up in new 4x4's or Mercs (new one every year), the offspring all in possession of the latest fashion gear, be that clothing or electronic toys. None in possession of anything like a work ethic. When they get bad grades or fail we are "racist" or "sexist", not a jot of personal responsibility. One of our elite copied an entire article from Wikipedia and did not have the brains to remove the url (nor did the article answer the question).
EMA for too many keeps people off the dole queue and therefore the government is seen to "deal with youth unemployment".
