The battle for freedom and opportunity is never finally won. In each generation, those of us who believe in freedom, in human potential, in the idea that the strength of our society comes from the energy and industry and creativity of our people; those of us who believe in these things must be ready to fight for them because the enemies of freedom are never finally vanquished. They always live to fight another day. Today we can see the enemies of freedom preparing a renewed assault on our liberty.

Noble sentiments, don't you think? The quote comes, of course, from David Cameron's speech to the ODS in November 2007, and which Guido greeted enthusiastically with the headline Cameron: "We Are Libertarians".

It's rather a pity, then, that the massively-foreheaded leader of the Tories has explicitly rejected libertarianism—even going so far as to tell lies about what it is. [Emphasis mine.]

But freedom can too easily turn into the idea that we all have the right to do whatever we want, regardless of the effect on others. That is libertarian, not Conservative—and it is certainly not me.

Yes, that was David Cameron at the Tory Conference this year. As I pointed out at the time, it was an appallingly ignorant thing to say, but was not very surprising.

Now it seems that the YBF will happily endorse Cameron's insincere witterings about freedom from last year—I wonder if they will now publish a poster featuring sections from his speech to the faithful this year...?
