1984 and other stories

Posted by Devil's Kitchen at 10/30/2008 07:33:00 AM

First of all, thanks to everyone who joined in the 1984 campaign: we got the required number of pledges in at 1pm on Tuesday afternoon, so every one of the 646 MPs will be getting a copy. Further, it seems that, thanks to donations, the party ordered so many copies that the publishers had to do a print run especially for us (we know, because we have a couple of copies with still-wet ink smudges on the cover)!

Those of you who have pledged to send a copy yourselves, remember that we want them to arrive by November the Fifth (or on that date, if possible) or the greatest impact.

In the meantime, the details of the first UK Libertarian Party Conference are up on the party's website. It's at the end of November and we have chosen to hold it in York, so that (hopefully) as many people as possible have as short a distance to travel as possible.

The plan is to start at 1pm, get the business over with as soon as possible (slated for about 6pm) and then go and have a colossal piss-up. Well, that's my plan at least...

We hope to see you all there! Or at least a goodly number of you...

Do you think University Radio York might be interested in the AGM?
I was thinking maybe they should be approached.

Ivan Lewis's copy of 1984 is packaged and ready on my desk. It will be setting off first thing tomorrow morning! Given his popularity in his constituency I was astounded to be the first person to request to send the useless twat a copy.

Monday for me too. I don't expect it too have individual impact, but it might get the bastards talking.

Maybe a media outlet will pick up the story too, AS LONG AS WE TELL THEM!

We tell them all the time, its whether they choose to run with the story !

What we have been sruck by is the sheer anger of some of those volunteering to spend a fiver, plus the fear of others trying to persuade their partners not to make this peaceful protest in case 'they' get you.

My copy was purchased Monday and is just awaiting the insert message which I'll think on over the weekend. It will be brief but there is so much very wrong with this country, if I were to mention it all the insert would be thicker than the book.

Good luck with the exercise. Those clowns have just voted 648 to 5 to destroy the economy. OK, they call it the Climate Change Act, but it is the same difference.

At least we can save on five lengths of hempen rope, and spend the saving on five bottles of good port for the only sane members of that sorry House.

Peter

I could give it a shot I suppose, one of my flatmates is trying for a job with the Radio and one of the student newspapers. I'll see if I can get in touch.

  • "Devil's Kitchen is the big name on the free-market libertarian strand of the British blogosphere... • "This hugely entertaining, articulate, witty Scottish commentator is also one of the most foul-mouthed bloggers around. Gird up your loins and have a look. Essential reading."—Doctor Crippen
  • "The Devil's Kitchen is one of the foremost blogs in the UK. The DK is bawdy, foul-mouthed, tasteless, vulgar, offensive and frequently goes beyond all boundaries of taste and decency. So why on earth does Dr Crippen read the DK? Because he reduces me to a state of quivering, helpless laughter."—Doctor Crippen's Grand Rounds
