Unions are a law unto themselves
Apparently, the TUC believes that the unions should not be subject to the same laws as everyone else, as Croydonian has discovered.

Yes, that's what they are saying, via the European Trade Union Confederation, of which it is part:"The ETUC therefore calls on Europe to fight for workers' rights, for fair and decent wages, for stable jobs and for strong collective bargaining practice, independent of and not subordinated to law courts and judges".
That is just one part of a frankly extraordinary document to which it has put its mark, 'The London Declaration: a call for fairness and tough action'.

Fuck. I don't see how even the hardest socialist could possibly attempt to justify this.
Unions are criminal organisations that should be banned. They're like mafias extorting "protection money" (union dues) from members they have no intention of ever protecting in case of real grievances.
They are criminals and must be treated as such.
That's interesting. Normally lefties are bleating about everyone being subject to the same law. Clearly they don't include themselves in this.
AFAIK the only reason unions are able to carry on their extortion is because it is protected by law.
If employers were free to sack striking extortionists, the unions would be toothless.
There's no need to ban anything.
Jesus H Christ, what were these people doing and thinking when the Berlin wall came down or the Soviet Bloc collapsed- Mostly by the collective will of workers impoverished by Socialism foisted on them by 'intellectuals'
Ah, the good old days!
Time to turn the clock back.
Don't you know that a few decades ago, the unions (in the UK, anyway) used to be specifically exempt (by act of parliament) from contract law, laws of tort, and so on? Employers could be sued for breaching a contracted pay agreement while the unions couldn't. Mrs T. put the mockers on that, but the unions hated the changes.
The unions have never been either democratic or "socialist" in the sense they care for people – they have always been totally "me, me, me!" with the emphasis on the louts who rise up the union ladder to take charge so they can live a life of ease on the backs of their "fellow workers"
They took a bit of knock a couple of decades ago and shrank back into their shells, but now we have a weak and stupid government clinging to the helm they are crawling out and stirring up trouble again.
No one should be the least surprised by any selfishness that the unions come up with. They love the idea of diktats and kontrol, any way they can get it.
