Eurovision: what a gas!

Although your humble Devil did not watch the whole painful exercise (or even part of it), I see that Russia's entry won the Eurovision Song Contest 2008.

Well, that'll keep the gas flowing for another year then...

There was a comment piece in the Independent today making essentially the same point (though in a much more long-winded way, of course).

"The cynical interpretation would be that these much less powerful countries were simply watching their backs. Ukraine wants the gas taps left on, if possible at preferential rates. Estonia does not want a repeat of the "cyber-war" when Russia apparently managed to disable its computer communications."

My family and I wateched it. We do so for the Wogan wit, which seemed muted this year since he had already predicted that it was fixed for Russia to win by ex soviet bloc voting trading.

We should just pull the plug on our membership of Eurovision and save a shed load of money that could be beter spent on some ethnic minority, disabled lesbian charity.
