Council Taxing

My Council Tax statement arrived today. It could be worse, I suppose: Lambeth Council's part is up by 4.8% (about the level of RPI inflation) and the GLA's part is up by 2%. Luckily, I get 25% off for living on my own. And here's the weird bit...

I live in a vaguely art deco 1930s (probably) block of flats at the top of Brixton Hill, on the border between Brixton and Streatham.

The flat is a decent size, the living room particularly, but it is, nevertheless, a one-bedroom flat in a block of fairly similar flats. In Brixton.

So, could someone please explain to me how it is, exactly, that my Council Tax is classified in band B? B! That is the second highest assessment band, is it not?

UPDATE: whoops! No, it's not. T'other way around. Nothing to see here...

Band B is second from the bottom not second from the top band

You don't actually get anything 'off' your council tax for living alone. If the tax on your flat is, say, £1000 per year, two people living in it pay £500 each. One person living in it pays £750. So you pay a 50% surcharge for being single.

The fact that the government have got away with this lie for years doesn't change the fact.

Hey DK,

You live on your own, eh? What a fucking surprise.

Cheers,

Your nemesis

I got my bill from Lambeth today too. I have a two-bed and it should in theory be in Band A but the valuers got in wrong in 1990. I looked into changing it but that would involve government inspectors poking about in my castle and they can sod off.

The spin from Livingstone's office makes for good reading in the pamphlet if you can be bothered.

I live in a terrace in West Yorkshire and I'm in band A (the lowest) so you might want to check that you've been classed correctly. Visit http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/council-tax-bands-change for the means to check it out. Hope this helps.
