It can't only be me that thinks that that statue of Nelson Mandela is incredibly fucking ugly, can it?

And surely the statue should be wearing a necklace, to symbolise all the great things that his wife, Winnie, did for the anti-apartheid movement?

No, it isn't. But it's a damn sight better than the god-awful PC status symbol that is the sculpture of Alison Lapper.

You wonder what they will put up next - a tribute to 'The Unknown Social Worker' perhaps...

It looks like that frozen Han Solo from the film, just a shame the real scumbag is not inside his statue.

I agree - it's even worse than the huge Easter Island-style head on the South Bank! I think one statue of Mandela in London is quite enough, really. I have some respect for the man, but I dislike his canonisation - nay, near deification. Let us remember that he is a former member of a violent terrorost organisation, when all is said and done. The reason I respect him is that he had the guts to renounce terrorism and work for genuine reconciliation.

Looks like a cross between Han Solo in carbonite and Mao.

A low blow, given that she's his ex-wife.

I really like the Lapper statue. The fact that she has no arms, a bit like Nelson up on the column, makes it more po-mo than PC.

Oddly, the statue seems to be about ten shades darker than he is. Was the real Mandela not black enough?
