The A Word

Iain Dale has reaped a shitstorm of epic proportions (and—damn!—some of his commenters are stupid, bigoted arseholes).
In an ideal world there would be no abortion, but we do not live in that world and never will.

Let us hope so. Although, as I like to hedge my bets and in case we do enter that kind of world again, does anyone know any knitting needle manufacturers with publically-listed shares?

My view on abortion has already been expressed recently, when I laid into Iain's pal, Nadine Dorries, a.k.a. Mad Nad, so I won't bother again. But let's just say that I'm pro-choice.

As to Iain's quite reasonable question about what we do about it, well, we could start by abolishing the Fucking Stupid Initiative and having rather better sex education.

It is also worth pointing out that many of the "comparable countries" that Iain refers to are, in fact, also primarily Catholic countries. And the Catholic Church is, on the whole, not a massive fan of abortion. Or, indeed, contraception.

I suppose that might be because buggering choirboys doesn't really call for contraception or result in abortion, eh?

UPDATE: Anyone at all interested in actual, accurate figures? And, indeed, reports on what might be done? Go to Unity's place.

"I could just about deal with "potential babies" and I could also deal with "fertilised eggs" and also with "foetus" but they are not "babies", OK?"

I am surprised at you DK! Euphemisms?

dk - if you look at the Department of Health's stats , the problem IS NOT because of lack of sex education.

here's the breakdown by age:
age range / no of abortions

15-19 40,244
20-24 55,340
25-29 40,396
30-34 28,153
35-39 20,074

so that knocks the "teenage abortion" myth on the head so.

the vast bulk is actually women OVER the age of 20.

here's a link the DH stats:

here

pdf and xls files available.

oh - for the record i'm pro-choice too. but i do find these stats very disturbing. we are talking about potential human life here.

Um, how does that prove that it's not about poor education? Or do people just magically become educated over 20?

If so, I think that the government should be told and we can abolish all the schools now.

come on dk - if you are over the age of 20 and you dont know about condoms, then you either have the brain of a amoeba , or you've gone to a Catholic nun's convent for your entire life.

i find either prospect hard to believe, in relation to these abortion stats.

i'm all for education. but the stats are telling me something else. its simply not just down to that.

Agreed. Sorry for the personal anecdote, but the other day, someone (over 20, university educated) tried to put a condom on me without pinching the tip to expel the air. This is, of course, a classic way to risk splitting the thing.

That's just an example of how poor education could lead to an abortion. Better education is not a magic bullet, but it does help.

Some people have put it down to alcohol consumption, etc. and I am sure that this is also true.

This is a non-sequeter, unless your arguement is that she was unable to read! Just because you have a University education doesn't preclude stupidity!

I don't buy this poor education arguement unless we are talking about young teenagers. It is simply used as an excuse for stupid and irresponsible behaviour.

As mister scruff said..."Its simply not just down to that."

Try reading in the dark and in the middle of something, old chap. Seriously.

I don't think that I said that education was purely to blame either. I merely pointed out that decent education would be a start.

However, please read the post on the Fucking Stupid Initiative.

Re: The Catholic Church etc...

There was a young verger named Binns,
used to talk about women and things.
But his secret desire
was a boy in the choir
with a bottom like jelly on springs.

Ay thang youw.! :-)

pogo,

Vergers have all but disappeared from the Catholic Church so he was probably an Anglica interloper!

You're wrong Matt - It's an non-sequitur because the someone was a man.
