Whale death! The BBC reports that "Rescuers put down beached whale".

I think that this has been edited as it came through on my RSS Reader as "Rescuers destroy beached whale" [emphasis mine] which gives a rather different impression of the process. Something involving explosives, for instance...

I was rather intrigued by this. How does one put down a whale?

I think a more pertinent question is how does one pick up a whale in the first place?

Very big gun? Very big syringe...?

I think 'put down' is generally used in place of 'destroy' in the media so as not to upset those of a tender nature. I seem to recall that the pitbull that savaged the little girl to death a few months ago was referred to as having been 'put down' in later news reports (conjuring up a soothing vet surgery image) when it was actually shot to death by police marksmen.
